SECTION III: MISCELLANEOUS CONSIDERATIONS

Thank you for considering a Marce Becerra Academy (MBA) student to assist you in the design of your web site. We have designed this information piece and questionnaire to assist with the design and implementation of your web site. Please print out this form, fill in the blanks and have it available for our initial design meeting. We will use this document as a flow chart to design your website. Upon completion of this form Jesse Heidmann, MBA's multimedia instructor, and an MBA student will meet with you to discuss your website.

We provide 3 standard website packages. Payments go directly to the student only if you are satisfied with the product.

Package 1 ($50):

1 WebPage to include:

Package 2 ($100):

A custom designed single page web site to give your business/organization a professional online presence. Plenty of room to give potential customers an introduction to your business. Will coordinate with your present image or create a new look. Logo, photos or graphics scanned and adapted for the web (up to three) or one piece of custom artwork.

Package 3 ($150):

A custom designed web site up to four pages to give your business a professional online presence.

Custom Package - Quoted per Design

A custom designed web site up to ten pages to give your busines/organization a complete professional online presence. Please fill out the remaining form if you choose this option. Larger sites or advanced features such as animations or javascript rollover buttons require more time and are therefore more costly.

One final note while you are thinking about design specifications. Jesse Heidmann took approximately 125 hours to create the Technology Consulting Alliance (TCA) website and 100 hours to create a website twice the size for a rockclimbing gym called Vertex. Poor planning and indecision explains why the TCA website required more time. Please do your best to thoughtful complete this form before asking us to start on your website. In addition the best website will be accomplished by you staying involved with Jesse and the student during the design process.

B. SITE ORGANIZATION

Below represents the organization for a typical website. Use the boxes below to label the organization for your website. If necessary use the back of this form or another sheet to label and organize your website.

SECTION II: LAYOUT AND DESIGN

A. NAVIGATION SYSTEM

The navigation system of our standard website design includes:

  1. Links from the front page and sectional pages to every page in the site to enable search engines to "spider" and index the content on every page.
  2. List of hyperlinks to each page that appears at the bottom of every page

Navigator Bars (Nav Bars) located on the left side of a web page are especially useful on larger sites. They enable visitors to immediately see where they are in the site and quickly get to any other within the site. We provide several different types of "Nav Bar" systems and examples to view:

Text Hyperlinks - The least expense type of left-side navigation system and the easiest to maintain. (See FileMaker Pro and BroadLink Communications for examples)

Graphics Buttons - These buttons take longer to download and are more expensive to develop because of the image creation. They do provide greater aesthetics to a website. (See Edgewood House Design, and Petaluma Center for examples)

Java Script Rollover - Interactive graphics that change when you move the mouse over them. The are the most expensive and sophisticated navigation systems we provide. (See Santa Rosa Junior College's Repertory Theatre, Vertex Climbing Center, and Effective Data)

B. TEXT BODY

Your website relies heavily on well-written text. MBA students will not write the text for your website. Please only provide us with a final version of the text for your webpages.

Please submit your copy in file format. We prefer Simple TextŠ but we also work the formats listed below:

C. FONTS

Font choices for body text are limited and uncontrolled in web design. The fonts listed below are fonts that we recommend because they generally exist on both Macs and PCs. Special font choices must be displayed as images which we recommend reserving for titles, headers, and logos.

Check the font you want for text body:

D. COLOR

Developing a color scheme for your websites is an important step in the design. As webpage designers we must take into account that various browsers (i.e. Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.) display colors differently, as do the various platforms (Macintosh, PC). When all is said and done, there are 216 colors that are shared among these variables, and designers must plan accordingly. If this planning doesn't't occur, what was designed to look good on one browser and one platform might fall apart on another.

Please go to our color chart and choose 5 color choices for your website. We will focus on these colors while designing your site. Write down the choices as hexidecimal values. If possible also provide a sample color palette or URL's of webpages with colors choices you prefer.

E. BACKGROUND

For the most part, we recommend a white background for best readability and contrast, with a band of color or pattern running down the left margin of the webpage. For example, this method was used for Vertex Climbing Center, and Marce Becerra Multimedia Design course.

Yet, the background doesn't have to be white. For example, Mohawk, SRJC Petaluma Center, Laurel More Estates, all have wonderful backgrounds that use solid colors other than white.

We can use images or photographs for a background. Generally we don't recommend this method because it requires more time and can make the website look "busy". However, when well done a background image can greatly improve a website. For example, Napa New Technology High School New Media Course, Dr. Ozones Tiled Backgrounds, Lodge At Paulin Creek all effectively use images for their background.

Briefly describe any special background preferences_______________________________________

F. TITLE AND COPYRIGHT INFORMATION

Page Title - Your page title can be a graphic or regular text. Vertex Climbing Center, and Lodge At Paulin Creek both use graphics for their page titles. Marce Becerra Multimedia Design course uses regular text for its page titles.

(If you checked graphics please provide a sketch and/or examples for the title page design. If possible include webpage examples and font names for title page.)

G. STANDARD COMPANY ID

Yes No Would you like your company information listed at the bottom of every page?

If yes, then provide the information you want listed:

Company Name ___________________________________________________________

Contact Person ____________________________________________________________

Address 1 ________________________________________________________________

Address 2 ________________________________________________________________

Yes No Do you want copyright and trademark information in small print at the bottom of every page?

If so, please list registered copyrights, trademarks or service marks below:

H. PHOTOS AND GRAPHICS

Photos and graphics add dimension and interest to your site. Images are available in a variety of forms including your own photographs, images purchased from stock photo sites, clipart, scanned company materials etc. We recommend photos and/or digitized images rather than clipart. We are able to suggest types of photos but we also recommend that you research what is available. Stock photos may be obtained from: Photodisc, Corel, PictureQuest.

If available, include a copy of your company's letterhead, brochures, catalog, etc. so we can see how you present your company's image. We prefer logo's and artwork to be submitted in maximum quality .jpg file format, but we do have the ability to scan images if this is not possible. Make sure to provide the photo number for each and every stock photo. Also, clearly label where to place each photo and graphic. We want a clear idea as to what goes where before we get started developing your website.

I. ANIMATIONS

Animations are a very effective way to spice up a webpage. The most common animations are animated GIF's or Shockwave/Flash movies. GIF files work on all browsers while Shockwaves/Flash movies require a plug-in that can be downloaded from Macromedia free of charge. Examples of pages with animated GIFs are: Linda Henenway's Student Examples, Vertex Climbing Center, and our TCA splash page. Many fantastic examples of Shockwave/Flash movies can be viewed in Macromedia's Sites with Life Gallery.

Yes No Would you like us to create custom animated images for your site?

(If Yes, please the theme for the animation. Tell us whether you want to use GIF or Shockwave/Flash. Feel free to include URL's of animations you like)

J. ON-LINE FORMS

Forms are designed to aid the owner of the web site with information gathering. We have several forms at our site and we are adding more all the time. They are very convenient for us as we try to point our clients in the direction of the form rather than depending on our technicians to deliver the forms and wait for them to be completed. The information completed on the form simply gets e-mailed back to you.

Yes No Would you like us to add forms to your website?

(If Yes, please each form on a separate piece of paper or in a separate file in the same format you submit your text body)

Types of Forms can include:

SECTION III: MISCELLANEOUS CONSIDERATIONS

Yes No Do you want to have a Web counter - A useful tool which allows the site owner to receive interesting statistics gathered when visitors hit your site.

Yes No Search Engines - Would you like us to register your site with search engines such as Alta Vista, Excite, Yahoo etc.? If so please provide a list of MetaTags. MetaTags are key words that some search engines use to find your site. List at least 10 key words that best describe your site, products or services.

A. WEB HOSTING

The URL (Uniform Resource Locator) for your site may be registered through your internet service provider (ISP). You may have a "standard" or "domain name" URL. Standard URL's typically include the name of your ISP, your username and name of your webpage. For example http://www.sonic.net/~jgheidmann/index.html would be considered a standard URL. Often this type of service is included with an internet account and your URL address will change every time you move and need to change your ISP.

Domain name registration is a hot issue these day, and especially important for small business that want to stake their claim on the internet. A domain name looks like: yourdomain.com where yourdomain is the name that you choose to register. Domain names such as allow you to have a permanent address on the internet that can travel with the site if you change ISP's. Plus, you can also use your domain name for your email address (user@domain.com). Prices for domains names vary among ISP's but the typically they have a one-time fee of $30-$50 and a monthly fee of $20-$35. In addition, you must pay an Internic fee which to date has an initial payment of $70 and a yearly payment of $35. Your total initial investment for a domain name will probably cost you between $155 - $190. We can check the availability of a domain name or you can check and register a domain name directly with Network Solutions.

Yes No Should we register your domain name

If yes, list your top three choices for a domain name:
